Rio Madrid 4 - 1 Zef Side

Structure, composure and fitness ensured triumph in this game. A top of the table clash proved to be one of the most satisfying victories for the proud Rio Madrid team, knocking down Zef Side by 4 goals to 1. R.M. was up against the odds with a limited pool of players to choose from as the Club had kindly released players from their contracts for the festive season, notably the regulars M.S. Greene and A. Verbeek. Only managing to field 5 players there was no room for injury or lethargy, the squad put together a comprehensive display of teamwork and synergy to score all 5 goals of the match...yes Kieran Burton managed to edge one past Goalie Hodges to give the opposition a mark on the board, but made up for it with a number of great saves in goal. Nonetheless 2 goals to Hodges and Young (sounding like the name of a new law firm) put the team convincingly at the top of the ladder. Telfer, true to his form, showed generosity in allowing his teammates to score all the goals...A note must be made regarding the team’s defensive performance; goalies were vocal and communication was rife resulting in limited opportunity for the enemy to shoot. The game was a clean one with good sportsmanship shown from both teams. Players riddled with perspiration at the final whistle proved how competitive the 30 minutes of football were, great work REDS.!

Rio Madrid 3 - 3 Firkin Wanderers

No update from Greene for this post, but it was a hard fought, physical tight game. Good preparation for following weeks top of the table clash!

Rio Madrid 4 - 1 The Bosnian Bombers

A stunning brace from defender A.VerBeek ensured Madrid stay atop of the league with a perfect record and send the Bosnian Bombers crashing to consecutive defeats.
Madrid set out from the get go with some nervous football until the 10 minute mark where some fluency set in after a beautifully constructed goal was calmly slotted home by Hodges. A nice pass to Greene from Young was back heeled to Hodges who stuck it in the bottom right corner.
With J.Telfer out of the side due to SARS, new winter signing A.Byrne from Rangers in the SPL started on the bench and regular starting defender A.Verbeek returned from injury.
These 2 proved to provide a solid backbone for the heart of the Madrid defence after a shakey performance last week.
2 more goals flowed for Madrid after the break both scored by VerBeek with the second of his double being hammered into the top right corner from outside the box.
The bombers then hit back with a rather fortuitous goal after the ball was struck into Hodges and deflected into the left corner of the net. This was the only setback after a brilliant performance in the net by keepers Burton & Hodges.
In the final minutes as the Bombers pushed forward Greene countered down the right wing and calmly finished into the right side of the net to guarantee the Miners a resounding 4 - 1 victory.
Next up Firkin Wanderers who will provide the toughest test of the season after a crushing 7 - 1 defeat of cellar dwellers samgin at the weekend.
