Rio Madrid 6 - 2 Perth Cossacks

"Another clinical display, another resounding win" The West Australian

"Red Miners strike gold in season opener" The daily Telegraph

"Telfer brace secures thrilling and entertaining opener" The Sun

In the first match of the new Lords Premier League season 2011/2012 Rio Madrid fielded there strongest lineup against what could only be described as the Ukraine National Side.

New summer signing L. Nicholas started off the bench alongside regular defender A. VerBeek. This meant strikers Young and Greene started in the forward positions with Telfer and Byrne in behind. Star signing from 2010 G. Hodges was fit again in goal after a 7 week lay off with a freak shoulder injury sustained in Kilimenjaro.

From the outset Madrid took control with some good passing and efforts going just wide from Greene and Young. It was Telfer who broke the deadlock though with a resounding effort from 9 yards into the bottom corner.

Madrid went into the half with the score 1 - 0 and came out with a new game plan that toyed with the opposition. Goals to Greene and Young made the score 3 - 0 before the Ukraine got back a cheap one.

With the fans a bit nervous in there seats now, Telfer thought enough was enough when he took the ball on the volley just inside the oppositions half and unleashed a thunderbolt which crashed off the crossbar into the auld onion bag.

Resounding goals to Greene and Nicholas followed and insured a comfortable and thrilling opening win for the Miners.

Man of the Match Jeff Telfer told RMTV "we deserved that victory, now we can look forward to tonights chicken and beer, as that what keeps me playing".

Until next time be safe and tune in next thursday evening for the next round of premier league action im Jim Nantz and this is Rio Madrid TV.
